Chapter 2

Ego: The Current State Of Humanity

This week Eckhart, along with Oprah, invite us to check-in with our breathing.  To simply ask "Am I still breathing?"  A meditation exercise, to focus upon the very breath as we inhale and exhale.  As explained, when we focus upon our breath - we cannot focus on other things - thus promoting Stillness.

In this chapter we learn about the Ego, and labels.  That because the label is a pre-conceived notion, we then communicate with the label or the pre-conceived matter, rather than the person or the situation.  Which then desensitizes us to the person.

A recommended exercise in life is to attempt to perceive people and nature without labels.  Feel the energy.  Allow yourself and the other person - or plant, flower, tree - to just BE.  Become aware of the other energy source without giving way to the urge to either acquire it or label it.

Ego is a gathering of compulsive and conditioned thought processes, therefore, once eliminated the energy then becomes free from thinking and becomes presence.

---

The word "I" embodies the deepest error and the greatest truth depending on how it is used.  This is referred to by Eckhart as the Illusionary Self.

Becomming identified to your story - "I am a victim" ... "I am successful" ... opinions or experiences.  In fact these are not a compilation of who you are but a collection of memories or experiences.

Clinging to an illness can also bring identification.  Talking about the illness repeatedly will empower the illness and the ego to identify and connect the illness to you.

Eckhart explains that in doing so, you will ultimately create psychological pain in addition to the physical pain you are experiencing.

Whereas you certainly must discuss your illness with your Dr. and pursue medications and treatments where necessary, do not spend every waking moment speaking it - giving it a name - "I am unwell."

---

Eckhart tells the story of Narcissus, who became so enchanted and entranced by his very image reflected in the water that he eventually drowned in it.  This is the birth of Ego.

---

Ego lives in your thought processes.  Such as in a young child who is given a toy.  The child becomes identified with the toy - "MINE!!"  and when the toy is taken away, the child then becomes very upset.  A sense of self is lost with the toy.  This of course grows with us into adulthood.  Our homes, our cars, name-brand clothing.  When we wear brand names - especially expensive ones, this becomes a part of our identity.  We feel as though we are inflated through our ego, which revels in the fact that it is a member of a sort of exclusive club.  Not everyone can afford to pay $400 for a pair of shoes.  If we all could - the shoes would be devalued.  And would then become meaningless to the ego.  The allure, and status would no-longer exist.

Ego is a false sense of self and identification of form.  Marketing specialists have mastered this.  Try to be AWARE the next time you are watching commercials, notice how you are sold an identity enhancer rather than the actual product.  If you buy this perfume, you will be attractive to men.  If you buy this suit, you will look like a CEO.  If you do you hair this way .... If you buy this car ... If you live in this neighbourhood ....

---

The ego of course is never wrong!  Therefore when we challenge the opinion of the ego, this can be hurtful to the ego and believes it is being attacked.  The "I" in the person will react - often negatively and will lash out in defense of the opinion.  The ego will often hold the position that their belief is the right belief and everyone else's opinions are wrong - and often stupid!

Try to be the "Awareness" when this happens.

---

Labels are learned a children.  When a child asks ... "What is this?" .... "What's that?" ... we can instead of saying "That's a bird" ... we should perhaps say ... "This is called a bird"  For when we give a label to the bird, the child then becomes disinterested in the bird.  The magic is gone.  From that point forward, the child will become lost in the conceptualization of the word and barely gaze upon a bird in the future when the label name will surface.  Rather than studying the bird, the feathers, the colours, the beak, the feet. the majesty of the living creature.

---

The beauty of this book and the classes for me is that each time I read the book or watch the classes, I take away something new.  In the class  #2 a caller asked about how to transition with the ego in growing older.  That we do not typically carry the beauty of our youth as we age.

I had an AHA moment - How often have we said ... "I feel 20!" (when you are really 40-something)

The destiny of all form is to dissolve.  The human body, animals, flowers, fruit ...

BUT the consciousness - that is to say; the God is us ... our essence does not age!

---

Often people who are dying are in a state of present awareness.  The "I AM-ness" becomes (and should always be) stronger than the story.

Eckhart quotes Jesus when He spoke: "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs will be the Kingdom of Heaven."

Eckhart offers this interpretation: That Poor in Spirit means No inner baggage, No identification.  Thus your Spirit is light and without burden.

---

Be also aware that ego is very jealous.  Any time you feel superior or inferior - that is Ego comparing itself to it's pre-conceived opinions/labels of others.  For example, when you walk into a crowded room.  You immediately survey those gathered.  And the Ego will establish a pecking order  based upon others - perhaps in employment position, style of dress, financial position.  This is all ego.

---

Remember that there is only NOW - the importance of the future to ego is simply to gain more. Being in the present disarms Ego.  Ego cannot survive in the present moment, it only lives in the past or future.

Memories are remembered - NOW
Planning for the future is done - NOW
Whatever you are doing is happening - NOW
NOW is the foundation for the rest of your life.

'Waiting' means you want to be out of this moment - out of the NOW.  Which, of course can never happen, as what ever moment you are in is NOW.

Practice BEing present in this moment.

Even if you do not like this moment, ACCEPT the ISness of this moment - then take action.

Remember the story of being stuck in the mud from Chapter 1 - you must ACCEPT that you are stuck - this is not to say you like being stuck or that you agree with it .... but that you ACCEPT that what IS in the NOW is that you are stuck.  Once you ACCEPT the NOW - then you can take action to get out of the mud.

Remember; What you resist persists.

---

Peace is living in alignment with the present moment.

Chapter 1

The Flowering Of Human Consciousness

In Chapter 1 - Eckhart introduces his conceptions of Consciousness, which is his term for what is more commonly understood as God.  He speaks to the consciousness of the world. The self-awareness and the lack of ability among humans to be present - in the present moment.  He also speaks to the variances of spirituality and religion.  Explaining that once we adopt beliefs - we then turn them into ideologies. Whereas spirituality is a sense of awareness of self consciousness.  That is to say that we are of God, therefore we are spirit. The awareness IS the spirituality.

Eckhart also speaks to the life around us, in nature.  In that once we take away the labeling of "the rose" ...."the oak tree" ... "the waterfall" ... if we turn off the voice inside our head and allow the awareness to come to the forefront, we can feel God in everything around us.  Oprah speaks to doing this on the grounds of her home in California.  She speaks about the colors and vibrations of energy coming to life when she allows nature to just BE ... without placing expectation or preconceived ideals upon what IS.

Recognizing the stillness in nature will better able you to recognize the stillness in yourself.

In the hustle and bustle of life, we often get lost in the flow.  We rarely take the moment for what it is, and give ourselves permission to be PRESENT in the MOMENT.

This really is the lesson of this chapter.

Just BE.

---

Eckhart shares his experiences when A New Earth was born.  That he asked Life what it wanted from him, rather than demanding from life what was wanted by him.  In time, he was given the feeling to relocate to Vancouver, where he began to write and where this book was ultimately created through him.

He has stated many times that the book wanted to be written. I think that is a beautiful thing.

---

Be aware that as humans move through the day-to-day life, stresses, worries ... etc ... that our very thoughts and fears contribute to the collective consciousness.  That is to say the energy/vibrations we collectively put out into the Universe, will determine what is returned.

---

Because all of us have that little voice in our heads, telling us that we Can't ... or we Shouldn't ... that we will Fail ... or planting seeds of guilt by saying that you Should Have...

This voice is simply the conditional thinking from childhood and society.  It is what we have been programmed to believe.  We should do this or that.  And if we do not - we have somehow failed.

Clearly, this is not so!

Simply allow the thought to be there .... see it ... in doing so, you empower the awareness - YOU are the AWARENESS .. the thought in and of itself cannot exist - it loses power once Awareness views it for what it is.  Mind Babble.

---

Whenever possible, surround yourself with people in like-minded state of present-ness, which changes the energy field - without becoming dependent upon the group in order to live your life in a present space.

---

Be in charge of your own destiny.  One cannot become good by trying to be good.  The road to hell is paved with good intentions and the ego will inevitably use mind-chatter to talk you into being good for all the wrong reasons.  If only to elevate it's own status.  Remember that negative will always challenge the positive. Work towards consciousness without thinking about it.  In time it will become automatic.

---

An awakening moment for Eckhart came through one of his life lows.  Depression had taken over his life, and he was in a very dark and scary place.  He had contemplated suicide, then he actually heard himself say "I cannot live with myself."

Once he heard these words pass his lips, he stopped. He thought.  And then wondered, if I am "I" and I am "Myself" does that indicate there are two of me?

Eckhart  then had his own AHA moment when he realized that the "I" is the awareness of "Self".  In that moment the "Self" died a spirited death as the "Self" cannot live with the the awareness of "I".

---

The  mind wants to get to the next moment in time.  We are never satisfied in the present moment.  The problem then is the realization that the next moment never comes.  As all you ever really have is the present moment. The NOW.  The present moment is a means to an end for many of us.  "If I can just finish this - I can do that." In doing this we devalue the present moment.

---

The Secret vs. A New Earth

Many people find conflict between the two books.  This too is addressed in the class.  We learn that it is not wrong or sinful to desire material things.  However, you need to seek where this desire is rooted.  It is okay to ask the Universe for a nice home ... financial stability ... good health ... etc.  However, if the request is coming from ego - you will quickly discover the source because once you receive that which you have asked for ... you are soon dissatisfied and begin to want bigger - better - more.

The 40" TV is not enough.  You need the 50" one!

Naturally this can be a fine line to walk.  You must recognize that things cannot and will not give birth to happiness.  You can appreciate the things you have but must become identified by them.  You must be in the world - not of it.

Once you accept that the basis of you / life is in the present moment, you will therefore see that neediness does not exist.

---

One thing I love about ANE is the little stories and analogies Eckhart shares with us in his teachings.

In this class he speaks..... If you are stuck in the mud - you do not curse the mud ... struggling will only get you in deeper.  Do not make the present moment the enemy.  Make peace with the present moment.  Accept that you are stuck in the mud.  Acceptance does not say you agree with or like a situation - just that you accept the IS-ness of the situation.

Action comes out of acceptance - not resistance.

What you resist - persists.

---

One of the skyper's during the class asked about sharing the awakening with loved ones - and how to accomplish this if they were not ready.  Eckhart redirected this thinking by stating that the only relevant question is "Am I ready?"

You cannot and must not be concerned with the rest of the world.

Run you own race!

Are YOU ready???

A New Earth

OK - I have been wanting to do this for some time.  And I think that now is as good as time as any.  Actually, that is an untruth ... this is a time of necessity!

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I simply adore this book.  I have read it a couple of times now and have taken part in the Oprah-Eckhart 10 week classes online.

I find the book not only awakening but also uplifting.

These classes were held two years ago I believe, perhaps even three years ago now.  And I do admit that lately, today in particular, I have allowed negative, evil, toxic energy to penetrate my space!!

I found myself needing to back away and meditate.  Pray.  And I found myself re-watching the first class again.  As such I recalled what an impact this book made on me and others world-wide, by the same token, I was reminded how challenging this book is for some people to absorb.

So, I will be blogging Chapter-by-Chapter interpretations.  Condensing the essence of each chapter, with quotes from Eckhart himself. (Taken from the video classes with Oprah)

Sort of a compilation of crib notes to serve as quick reminders for not only myself, but also (hopefully) to aide in others being able to digest Eckhart's writings.

Each posting from this one onward, will be INDEXED under "A New Earth" on the home page.
